Between this and Hyper Training, perhaps now's the time to get into competitive battling.

Just gotta think of a good team first.

I'd be happy to. You can find my 3DS Friend Code in the Codes and Tags thread.

Pokémon Sun and Moon can trade with X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, right?

Nope, they can't.

Ah. Well. That's a shame.

Image New Gen means no backwards trading. Only Gen II ever did that, and it doesn't seem like it'll be coming back anytime soon.

Though speaking of old Gens, Meloetta is now available for download via Mystery Gift in X/Y/OR/AS, and so is the second chance Arceus. North American code is ARCEUS20.

Image Here we are! Our first Mythical of a new Generation!

Image

Just scan that QR Code using the QR Scanner and then head to Hau'oli City Mall's antique shop where a man will be standing in front of the NPCs. Talk to him to get your Magearna!

This makes Pokémon #301 for me in Alola (yes indeed, I finished my Dex, a feat I have not done since Gen II).

------------------------

Speaking of QR Codes, here's a funny tidbit: If you get a blue screen on Windows 10, a QR Code appears. This code actually works for Sun and Moon and guess what shows up!

A Mareep!

I guess androids DO dream of electric sheep!

Image Ah, there's Empoleon, our final Pokkén Character if the CSS is to be believed (there's no room left). Based on the trailer, it looks to have quite the gimmick involving creating ice on the ground to increase its speed and create new combos. Otherwise, it seems to be a heavy-hitting Power character, though the trailer didn't clarify. The Burst Attack amused me a little since it reminded me a lot of Hydro Vortex from Sun/Moon.

So, the final count:

Gen I: Charizard, Pikachu, Pikachu Libre, Machamp, Gengar, Mewtwo, Shadow Mewtwo
Gen II: Scizor, Suicune
Gen III: Sceptile, Blaziken, Gardevoir
Gen IV: Empoleon, Garchomp, Lucario, Croagunk, Weavile, Darkrai
Gen V: Chandelure
Gen VI: Braixen

This means that if we were to exclude duplicate Pokémon, Gen IV actually got the biggest representation. Interesting.

--------------

And for Sun/Moon players, the first Battle Competition is now available for registration. It is known as the Battle of Alola and you have until the 15th to register, with the actual battles happening from the 16th to the 18th. You may battle up to 15 times per day and you get 50 BP just for participating! Might as well try if you're having difficulty getting the Destiny Knot (it's available only as a Pickup or for 48 BP at the Battle Royal).

The 301 Pokémon available in the Alola Dex are fully eligible, including so-called "special Pokémon" and even Ash-Greninja is eligible. However, you can only have 1 Special Pokémon in your party. I'm not sure what constitutes Special Pokémon, but here are the ones I know for a fact count as special:

Solgaleo
Lunala
Necrozma
Magearna
Ash-Greninja

Everything else seems fair game, so go nuts. It uses Single Battle format.

Decided to start getting into competitive breeding. Heard that a Destiny Knot was necessary, so I formed a team of Pokémon with Pickup, and did some farming.

2 days later, after 8 hours of gameplay, I got a bunch of big nuggets, pearl strings, currently have 8 rare candies.....but no Destiny Knot.

!#%$.

Image Easily one of the worst things this Gen, but hang in there. I did eventually get mine after a lot of searching.

Alternatively, you could sign up for this weekend's Battle of Alola, even without something competitive. All participants get 50 BP, which is enough to purchase the Destiny Knot from the Royal Avenue.

--------------

And speaking of Kiyoshi...I literally found him in the post game!

Some spoilers here, of course.

Spoiler: click to show
I'm talking about Ryuki, one of the challengers that you defend your Champion title from, and the only one who isn't a character we've met previously. He's a Dragon-Type User, all of his Pokémon being at 61. Leads with a Garchomp, but also comes out with a Drampa, a Turtonator, a Dragonite, and a Kommo-O. Explains the name a bit (ryū is dragon in Japanese, as we've come to know) but the full name, spelled ryūki, can also mean "black nightshade" in Japanese. How metal!

He's got a hairdo not unlike what one of Kiyoshi's avatars looked like (I'm thinking specifically the Pokémon RP), and a red metal outfit that's covered in spikes. But above all else, the man plays a mean axe according to his backstory, with "rocking" being the thing he does right down to his bones. His concept art even has him carrying a guitar case covered in spikes. He claims that while critics love his music, his music didn't sell for quite a long while. But he never stopped being himself and eventually he became a star, since music is what he loves most of all and has come to Alola to make a bigger name of himself by challenging the Champion (that's you). Upon defeat, he advises you to always be yourself, as he has.

------------

As an extra aside, there is a Type Specialist for EVERY Type in Alola except for Ice. They are as follows:

Normal - Ilima
Fire - Kiawe
Water - Lana
Electric - Sophocles
Grass - Mallow
Ice - _____
Fighting - Hala
Poison - Plumeria
Ground - Hapu
Flying - Kahili
Psychic - Faba
Bug - Guzma
Rock - Olivia
Ghost - Acerola
Dragon - Ryuki
Dark - Nanu
Steel - Molayne
Fairy - Mina

-----------------------

And just for fun, I decided to look at all the potential Pokémon the different Battle Tree Trainers from past games could use and decided to see if they match up with what were used in previous appearances. More spoilers, but I thought it'd be fun all the same:

Spoiler: click to show
Anabel can use Alakazam, Snorlax, Raikou, Entei, Latios, and Lucario. Aside from Lucario, all of the Pokémon were used in her Frontier Brain battles in Emerald, with Snorlax being in both Silver and Gold.

Blue can use Pidgeot, Arcanine, Alakazam, Machamp, Exeggutor, Gyarados, Aerodactyl, Tyranitar, and Rhyperior. Pidegot, Arcanine, Alakazam, Exeggutor, and Gyarados were all part of his final team in Red/Blue and FireRed/LeafGreen as well as used for his Gym Battle in Gold/Silver/Crystal with Rhydon being the one missing. Tyranitar was added in for his rematches in FireRed/LeafGreen and HeartGold/SoulSilver. Machamp replaced Alakazam in his Gym Battle in HeartGold/SoulSilver. Aerodactyl's only appearance previously was as one of his Pokémon in the PWT in Black 2/White 2. Likewise, Rhyperior's only appearance was in his rematch in HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Colress can use Alolan Muk, Electrode, Porygon2, Metagross, Magnezone, Porygon-Z, and Klinklang. While Metagross, Magnezone, and Klinklang all appeared on his team in the post game of Black 2/White 2, the rest is all brand new.

Cynthia can use Milotic, Spiritomb, Garchomp, Lucario, and Togekiss. This set is the same makeup as her Champion battle in Platinum (minus Roserade). In Diamond/Pearl, she used a Gastrodon in place of Togekiss. Much of the same team would appear in Black/White and Black 2/White 2 as well, with varying differences (the only ones that remained with her in every single appearance were Spiritomb, Garchomp, and Lucario).

Dexio can use Alolan Ninetales, Slowbro, Espeon, Whimsicott, Braviary, Passimian, and Turtonator. He was never battled in X/Y, but it is worth noting that the majority of his team is Sun exclusive.

Grimsley can use Houndoom, Tyranitar, Sharpedo, Absol, Honchkrow, Drapion, Liepard, Scrafty, and Bisharp. Every single one of these Pokémon was one Grimsley could have used in any of the Gen 5 games. Scrafty and Bisharp made an appearance all the time. Liepard appeared all the time except for Challenge Mode Rematch in Black 2/White 2. Drapion and Sharpedo only appeared in Black/White on his rematch. Absol only appeared in his first match in on Challenge Mode in Black 2/White 2. Houndoom and Honchkrow appeared in his rematch in all modes in Black 2/White 2. Tyranitar appeared in his rematch only on Challenge Mode in Black 2/White 2. He didn't seem to bring his Krookodile with him, though.

Guzma can use Pinsir, Honchkrow, Toxicroak, Liepard, Bisharp, Toxapex, and Golisopod. Looks like he is no longer Bug-exclusive, though he still has his boy Golisopod with him, and the Dark and Poison show some of his old Team Skull roots.

Kiawe can use Arcanine, Alolan Marowak, Kangaskhan, Talonflame, and Salazzle. The majority of his team is obviously Fire-Type, his specialty, but as an added bonus, the majority of his Pokémon can also be found in their base stage at Wela Volcano Park, the sight of his Trial.

Mallow can use Sceptile, Talonflame, Trevenant, Toucannon, Lurantis, Tsareena, and Comfey. Unlike Kiawe, while most of her team is Grass, they don't make up as vast a number. And while a good chunk can be found in the Lush Jungle, the location of her Trial, the team is a bit more spread out in terms of habitat. However, most do share something in common: They can be found on the Akala Pokédex. The one exception is Sceptile, who really sticks out.

Plumeria can use Gengar, Crobat, Toxapex, Lurantis, and Salazzle. Not only is most of the team keeping with her Poison theme, this is almost the same Pokémon she can use to challenge you for the title of Champion. The one exception is Lurantis, which replaced her Muk.

Red can use Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Lapras, and Snorlax. Minus Pikachu, this is the same team he used in HeartGold/SoulSilver as well as Black 2/White 2. For the record, in Gold/Silver/Crystal, he had an Espeon in place of Lapras. For extra fun, you can also see this team as major Pokémon you would find on your own journey in Kanto (Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise are all the final evolutions of the starters, Lapras is gifted at Silph Co. during Team Rocket's takeover, and two Snorlax can be found blocking the road that you need to wake using the Poké Flute after rescuing Mr. Fuji).

Sina can use Alolan Sandslash, Abomasnow, Glaceon, Lilligant, Mandibuzz, Oranguru, and Drampa. She was never battled in X/Y, but it is worth noting that the majority of her team is Moon exclusive.

Wally can use Altaria, Garchomp, Magnezone, and Gallade. Naturally, Altaria is the only one that was used not only during Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, but also OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire, though it gets dropped in his fourth-onward matches. Garchomp replaces Altaria in that sense. Magnezone and Gallade are his star Pokémon after defeating the Elite Four in OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire, even to the point that they are the two he will use in Multi-Battle at the Battle Maison if you decide to bring him along.

I've already signed up for it. I was hoping I could find the Destiny Knot and use the 50 BP for Power items instead, but clearly that's not going to happen. Guess I'll just SOS chain for the Pokémon that I want instead.

On the plus side, from all that farming I did, my Garchomp caught Pokérus and spread it to my Pickup team. Yay!

Yeah, Ryuki definitely reminded me a lot of Kiyoshi. From being a guitarist, to the crazy hairdo, and even having a Japanese name. You don't think Gamefreak lurks this forum, do you?

I don't get why they keep changing up breeding and other stuff, it's weird when I think Gen 6 sort of had it the best. That said I do have to start bringing over the rest of my Pokemon...something I never finished up with Gen 6. Or even Gen 5, which is basically bringing all of my stuff from Gen 4 into those games. Hopefully I can do it over winter break. Hope we can transfer items too...

Spoiler: click to show
They (and Nintendo too) lurk Smogon, and other big names like that...you never know! I think Ruki and I are the only ones from here that were ever on smogon, so that's the only real way they could have found this place but I doubt it. Maybe they saw something. If Ryuki had a Salamence and some of Kiyoshi's other Pokemon...
