F.A.Q.

When is the release date?
3DS - Available NOW
Wii U - November 21st, 2014

How many characters will there be?
37 before hidden characters 49 total making this the biggest roster to date.

Will there be DLC?
Absolutely! Mewtwo was the very first DLC announced and will be released in Spring 2015. So this could mean that the final roster for Smash could be even bigger than what I initially wrote!

What is the difference between the 3DS version and the Wii U version?
Other than the graphic capabilities and control styles, the 3DS and Wii U versions will feature entirely different stages, with the 3DS focusing mostly on handheld entries while the Wii U focuses on console entries for stage designs. Trophies will also be different between the two versions, and just like with stages, 3DS will focus on handhelds and Wii U will focus on consoles. The 3DS version also comes with its own unique mode called Smash Run. The basic gameplay itself remains the same between both versions.

Can I connect the 3DS and Wii U versions together?
There is some slight connectivity between the two. You can use it to transfer any special moves you unlocked for your characters as well as your hand crafted Mii Fighter.

Is there a Single-Player Mode? (Like Adventure from Melee or the Subspace Emissary from Brawl)
There is Single-Player content, but not on the scale that the Subspace Emissary was. Sakurai has gone on record that doing that seemed pointless since people could watch the cutscenes on the Internet so he isn't doing something like that this time.

Can I use a Nintendo Gamecube Controller?
Yes you can! Nintendo has unveiled an official Nintendo Wii U adapter that will let you hook up your Gamecube Controllers to the Wii U.

I don't like how bulky the GamePad is! Can I use a different controller?
Most certainly! The Wii U Pro Controller has been confirmed to work with the game and it's possible that similar control schemes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii Remote, Wii Remote + Nunchuck, Classic Controller) would probably work as well.

Does the 3DS touch screen/GamePad screen do anything special?
The 3DS touch screen displays key information such as stock count and damage percentage. On top of that, touching a character's portrait will highlight them on the top screen. We do not know what differences the GamePad offers.

What is amiibo and how does it fit in with Super Smash Bros.?
amiibo is Nintendo's take on the "toys into games" genre popularized by Skylanders. Super Smash Bros. will utilize these figurines to create customizable AI fighters that can grow and learn. They can be used as training dummies, tag-team partners, or even to fight against another friend's figure. Players themselves don't directly control the amiibo character and they can level up to 50.

Where can I get the most up to date news and screenshots?
Be sure to check out http://www.smashbros.com/ for the latest information and screenshots. You can also follow the Super Smash Bros. Miiverse page to see the latest posts by Sakurai himself.

I'm fairly convinced Captain Falcon will return since Sakurai mentioned him in an update and it'd be odd if Falcon didn't return despite this mention.

On characters returning from Melee, I'm personally not too sure on Young Link. Toon Link effectively replaced him in Brawl, but he could return due to OoT 3D. It could happen, same with Mewtwo due to X and Y granting him two forms and B/W giving him an exclusive move plus the Genesect movie. I don't see Roy since according to DG, he is not that popular. Pichu could, I'm doubting it though I wouldn't want it to return anyway.

I suppose I am considering this thread has more condensed information about the game than the smash bros site itself.

Image I'll take that as a compliment.

Image I was always in awe of how other forums out there (most notably NeoGAF) would have these big, impressive threads dedicated to specific topics and always wanted to make one myself. Now, it's a far cry from what most do but I think it gets the job done.

For the record, not everything can actually be found on the main site, so this thread serves a secondary purpose of making sure all information that has been revealed in the past doesn't get lost. I used various other sites and wikis to find out the other information to make sure I didn't forget anything.

Image Captain Falcon I'd say is a shoe in really. I'd say he's even more well known in Smash than he is from F-Zero. It helps that his moveset is completely devoid of anything that resembles the F-Zero games except for his Final Smash. If I remember correctly, Falcon's moveset was actually adapted from the original version of Smash Bros., back before it was the mascot fighter we've come to know and love, so if you think about it, Captain Falcon is actually the original Smash Brother in the same way that Rhyhorn is the original Pokémon. So having him get pulled is very unlikely, in my opinion.

Same goes for all the N64 characters. They've been in 3 games so far, why stop now? Though it is very unusual that we haven't seen Yoshi yet, who was not only an original character, but is the only default character from the game to not be shown thus far. My theory is that he's getting an overhaul similar to what Bowser got, changing his stance (and possibly his moves) to better suit how Yoshi is portrayed these days. In Smash, Yoshi was always seen hunched over like he did back in Super Mario World, making it easy for Mario and Luigi to ride him. But in many games where they are not present (most notably Yoshi's Story, which is where the majority of Yoshi's transformation comes from), he's standing upright, almost like a human and less like a dinosaur. Maybe they're trying to rework it to reflect him more like that?

Similarly, the only default character from Melee to not be present are the Ice Climbers. Unlike Yoshi, I can't imagine them getting a huge change since they were already original enough. Even taking into account Rosalina and Luma, they still offer things that they can't do, such as making special attacks more powerful when both of them are together (like Blizzard attacking both sides instead of one). It is possible they are going for a retool to match what Rosalina does.

And I'm right with you on the possibility of Mewtwo returning solely because of its new found focus in the franchise with its Mega Evolutions. I'd say we even have an ideal Final Smash right there (the question is being would we see X or Y or maybe both? I'm leaning towards Y since that's the one that got showcased the most). More importantly, as far as I'm concerned, Gen VI doesn't exactly have what I'd call a "mascot" of the series like how Lucario was for IV and Zoroark was for V. That's not to say there weren't any that couldn't work in Smash (in fact, I think Hawlucha would be perfect), but I am not sure there was any that Nintendo and Game Freak really pushed towards in their marketing. The ones that got the most focus were the starters (which, as I've said previously, means we'd have to include all three to prevent anyone from feeling left out, though Pokémon Trainer was a clever way around that), Sylveon (who...I just can't see working in this game), the Legendary mascots (who are, much like Ridley, TOO BIG...and Xerneas was already seen in the background anyway) and Mega Mewtwo Y. Mewtwo is still one of the most popular Pokémon of all time so it's possible we could see a comeback.

Mr. Game and Watch is a quirky one but I think that's exactly why I feel he'll come back. There's no other character like him.

And then there's the case of the clones, only two (possibly three if you accept Young Link = Toon Link) of which made it back into Brawl. Dr. Mario isn't gonna happen unless they do a skin thing like with Wario in the past (and we did get to see the male Wii Fit Trainer alongside the default female Wii Fit Trainer in a screenshot so...maybe there's a possibility?). Similar case with Pichu. I swear, even the game itself seemed to imply that some of these character slots were used just to fill up space (Dr. Mario was seen much more favorably than Pichu, who everyone agrees is completely useless). I also agree on Toon Link basically replacing Young Link. There's really no need to include that many Generations of Links (though having the Hero of Time, the Hero of Winds, and the Hero of Twilight altogether does sound like the beginning of a great joke...or a terrible fan fic). You're pretty right about Roy as well. He isn't that popular outside of Melee (ask any really down to Earth hardcore Fire Emblem fan and you'll find very, very few who favor Roy as their Lord of choice) and that's not even getting into the fact that he was included as pure advertisement. His game wasn't even out yet in Japan and was included for pure hype purposes. The only ones who have any desire of having him back are the hardcore Melee fanatics. Finally, we have Ganondorf and Falco, who did return to Brawl, and I feel they may return here as well. Ganondorf because...well, he's Ganondorf! Why wouldn't you have him? Falco is basically Fox's own Luigi. The two just need to be together. (...Not like that, you shippers reading this.)

Brawl's returners are a bit harder to predict since they were only in one game so far. While we haven't seen Meta Knight, I think the reason for showing Dedede before him was simply because of Kirby Triple Deluxe being released in Japan very recently. In the game, Dedede actually has his own rhythm game segment you can play, but as far as I can tell, Meta Knight was no where to be seen (doesn't mean he isn't in the game at all, just that we have no confirmation at this point). Because Sakurai loves to do tie ins like this (Luigi introduced during a Year of Luigi segment, Sonic introduced to focus on the partnership with Nintendo that Sega has going on, Toon Link for the launch of Wind Waker HD, etc.), he probably went with Dedede to avoid any potential spoilers from that game. I don't see Meta Knight being removed because he was really popular. I do see him being retooled though...

Wario's another I totally see coming back due to his wacky style just being so unique amongst the fighters. Why pull him now when you could pull his finger instead? (Heh, a fart joke...)

Having Lucas and Ness existing together was a bit odd, admittedly, but I can still see it working out if Sakurai's still okay with the clone idea. Now, if they add in Ninten as well, that's going too far! (A Ninten skin for Ness would be great though)

In regards to transformations like Sheik and Zero Suit Samus, let's all remember back in the Dojo where people were freaking out when we didn't see Sheik revealed at the same time as Zelda. The same thing is probably happening here. These two are a part of the already existing characters of Zelda and Samus, respectively. They probably just haven't been properly coded/rendered yet.

Diddy Kong has gotta be back too. Sakurai's just waiting for the right moment...by which I mean, of course, February when Tropical Freeze comes out. (Watch it be a Cranky Kong reveal instead)

R.O.B. is the odd-man out, being the only character that's a peripheral instead of a virtual avatar. But Sakurai seems to love these weird ones (hence Mr. G&W and Wii Fit Trainer) so he's probably a safe bet.

Ike...I'm a bit unsure of to be honest. It's one thing to bring back Marth, he's legacy. But Ike's story is over now, and has been since 2007, if I remember correctly. We have a new game out now that's already got some focus in the 3DS version so it's quite possible we are saying goodbye to our friend Ike in favor of someone newer, like Chrom. Just like how Roy was an advertisement for Fire Emblem 6, Ike was there for Fire Emblem 9 and 10. We are on 13 (or 11 if you don't count the two DS remakes) and I foresee a fresh face.

Lucario is also one I'm unsure of, for similar reasons. While I did say Gen VI didn't have much to represent as a mascot, Gen V does, and who's to say they haven't begun work on Zoroark, even before VI was even revealed. And speaking of, there's still the Mewtwo and his Mega Evolution thing to compete with. The only advantage is that Lucario is already complete and the other two can't truly replicate him.

Wolf was heavily criticized for being a Star Fox character that also used a Landmaster as their Final Smash (and for Star Fox fans, that made absolutely no sense since Star Wolf doesn't have access to Landmaster Tanks), so I'm wondering if this clone was taking it too far. Maybe if he comes back, he'll receive a significant retool... Again, if.

Finally, we have Snake, the biggest mystery of all. His inclusion in Brawl was a huge deal at the time, but we are several months down the line now and still no word on his return. I'm much more unsure about him than anything else really. Nintendo already used their "big third party reveal" card with Mega Man, who was a heavily request third party character previously, as was Sonic, hence his return. But how many actually wanted Snake before Brawl was even announced? He was only included because Sakurai and Kojima were pretty tight with one another and included him as a favor. But what happens now? That's not even getting into the debate about MGS5 not only not being on the Wii U, but also having a completely different voice actor that fans aren't feeling ready to accept yet, plus the fact that this isn't Solid Snake but Naked Snake instead, so it's technically a different character. Who knows at this point?

Well...that's about all for now. It's the weekend so there won't be any new screenshots until Monday. Perhaps we'll see something cool then.

Oh goddamnit I forgot to get tickets for APEX...oh well.

The Captain Falcon-Rhyhorn comparison makes sense, actually. Never thought about it like that. I never noticed that with Yoshi, though I'd imagine maybe he is getting an overhaul as well. If they're trying to balance competitive and casual, maybe that would make sense but what you're saying is true too.

Ice Climbers though, I didn't notice a difference with them between Melee and Brawl. They have some differences like both of them being able to grab the ledge, but beyond that they don't seem different.

Mewtwo's final smash could possibly use one of them, at random; that'd be interesting. After effects could differ, and so on. I do not believe Gen VI has a signature Pokemon either, so it'd be a hard pick. I'd still love a Pokemon from each gen honestly, it'd be so great. All three Kalos starters would be nice though, as long as they fix Pokemon Trainer's stupid problems. Slyveon couldn't work either...maybe. I could see it as a potential signature Pokemon for Gen VI due to all the media around it but I'd love to see another legendary as well.

Alternate skins for characters would be great, I liked that about Wario. Dr. Mario would be Mario's skin, and Pichu...should just not return. At all. Even if they fix it, we could use something far more worthy than something cashing off Pikachu's popularity. As cool as having multiple Links would be, yeah, no need. Again, skins could fix this. TP Link could have an OoT skin, and Toon Link could have a Young Link, or A Link Between Worlds skin. Roy I have nothing to add on but what we covered is true. Ganondorf is indeed Ganondorf, but I hope they make him more different from Falcon. Falco is awesome in general, and he shows that to some extent the developers really changed Melee newcomers and clones, as it was a common criticism of the game.

Meta Knight is popular all around so he could return. Sakurai and his tie-ins is interesting...I guess. Who knows? I'm ok with Lucas and Ness. I'm wondering how they may change Sheik and Zero Suit Samus. Diddy would be nice as well, probably will be announced around Tropical Freeze. Cranky Kong would be funny. Wario must return, he was fairly overdue. I just hope he is based off Wario Land more, and not solely off Warioware. Wario was fun and such a great addition.

Aww I liked Ike, he was so fun...to just kill people at low percents >.> among other things. I think he's far more popular than Roy, but I know a lot of people raged that he was so OP.

Lucario still has some popularity, and as you said they could port him over with some tweaks. Ehh, Wolf could return. He is again well liked, and was already kinda different...though still very much the same. He just needs a bit more.

Snake...could be announced around MGS5's release, or something. Maybe some sort of MGS news? Having a new VA has really ruined the fanbase. And personally I believe that Snake in Brawl is a mixture of Solid Snake and Big Boss/Naked Snake, because Solid Snake doesn't actually use CQC until MGS4, and some of Snake's sneaking suits were based on Big Boss's camoflague from MGS3, along with some attacks being from both Snakes' games. Brawl Link had aspects from multiple Links, like the blonde hair, and the fairy in a taunt.

I would actually love playing as Cranky Kong. They've already made him playable in Tropical Freeze with his own unique abilities. Plus it's fun to watch old guys beat people up.

Similarly, I'd love if Sylveon were added, because it being a quadraped would really add some new possibilities for fighting, not to mention the wierd scarf tentacles.

Also, if Falco and Wolf are coming back, I'd say Fox should be slightly re-tooled to have more ground-based moves, while Falco plays more areal, and Wolf plays slower but more powerful. Wolf is unique enough in Brawl to pass I think because he tended to use his claws as slashing weapons as opposed to blunt force. Though Falco and Wolf seriously need different final smashes. Falco should have an arwing, Wolf should call in his team. It'd be perfect.

As far as Ganondorf goes, I personally think his Wind Waker iteration gives the most possibilities for fighting. in OoT he just kinda threw energy balls but in Wind Waker he was dual-weilding longswords. I personally think that's way cooler. But no matter what they do, they certainly shouldn't copy off Captain Falcon again.

Yeah far as I've noticed, Fox uses more kicks in his attacks, while Falco prefers punches, and Wolf uses his claws. Falco would work with an arwing, he does prefer the air after all but I'm not sure on Wolf, perhaps he could call in his team yeah. I have heard some people note that Wolf is fairly different in some ways to the two. I do feel that as the three go, Fox is the fastest, lightest and maybe weakest, Wolf is the slowest, heaviest and most powerful, and Falco falls in the middle overall in these aspects. His blaster stuns like Wolf's, and goes the distance like Fox's as well.

Slyveon could work maybe, but I'm with B on not knowing how it'd work.

I agree on Ganondorf from Wind Waker, he could work with his dual long swords, and he could be still slow. We don't actually have a dual wielding character in any Smash game, so that would make him different, and he could still use Melee attacks.

Image Oh, I do love that the Daily Screenshot updates automatically! Minimizes the amount of work I have to do, that's for sure!

Image This one gives us a bit more on Dedede. Looks pretty powerful indeed.

In fact, Sakurai claims on Miiverse that it is one of the "strongest smash attacks in all of Smash Bros." He also advises we use it wisely.

By the way, would you think it'd be better if I put the Daily Screenshot at the top of the post instead of the bottom so it's the first thing you guys see?

yeah, it's the thing that'll change the most so having at the top would be good.

Image Okay, Daily Screenshot now at top instead of bottom.

For today, Sakurai explains that the attacks of Rosalina and Luma are completely different. Here, Rosalina creates a Saturn-esque ring above her head for strong Up A, while Luma does an uppercut instead.

Not sure what's going on with the main website since it's not showing the daily picture shown here.

((OOC: And now that song is in your head, isn't it?))
